Cerro Castor is the southernmost ski resort in the world. Located in the province of Tierra del Fuego and 26 km away from the city of Ushuaia this 10-year old resort offers excellent snow conditions, brand new lifts, superb on-mountain services and incredible vistas of the Patagonian Andes.

Several flight a day serve the Ushuaia airport and it takes almost 4 hours to get back to Buenos Aires. No matter the distance Cerro Castor is definitely worth a visit as it offers a quite unique ski experience.
One of the key factors here is its latitude: 54º S which is the same distance to the south pole as Moscow is to the north pole. This means snow conditions are among the best in South America and a long season is always guaranteed. Also Cerro Castor base is located at only 195 meters over sea level making it one of the lowest – if not the lowest one - ski areas in the world.

For a mid-size ski resort Cerro Castor features a really good vertical drop of almost 2,500 vertical feet. This is even more than Alta in Utah. The runs here are carefully groomed and thanks to a dry snow and modern equipment the grooming here is sometimes better than many other ski areas in South America.

Cerro Castor welcomes guests from mid June to mid October. Thanks to its location snow is usually guaranteed from beginning to end and excellent mid-winter conditions remain until late in the season. While some of the resorts in the Central High Andes have high temperatures in September – sometimes reaching 14º C / 57º F – Cerro Castor may be easily ranging from –1º C to 5ºC / 30º F to 41º F.

Based on this and also on the fact that local holidays do not really affect the quantity of skiers on the mountain Cerro Castor can be visited at any time during the season. Keep in mind June and July will bring good conditions but colder weather. August offers great skiing as well but winds tend to be a bit stronger during this month but not strong enough to avoid it. And September mixes great snow with longer and sunnier days. As an important note please keep in mind there are 7 hours of day light from early June to mid July. From here until the early August day light goes up to 8 hours and 30 minutes. By the end of August it reaches 10 and a half hours. And by late September there are more than 12 hours of light.

While on the slopes Cerro Castor is famous for both snow champagne powder and on-mountain restaurant views. Ski hard and relax at lunch time. If weather allows try to get an outside table and admire the incredible surrounding mountains and forests. Enjoy food here as even being resort restaurants you can expect excellent and delicious dishes.

When not skiing the city of Ushuaia offers several fantastic restaurants and bars as well as a casino and discos. Trying the local cuisine – from king crabs to Patagonia lamb – is a must when visiting the southern tip of the Americas. For days off the slopes there are really special excursions in the area from sailing the Beagle channel to exploring the Lapataia Bay and the Tierra del Fuego National Park.

Skiing and riding at the End of the World is a truly unforgettable experience. Just imagine the mountains here – usually visually compared to the ones in Alaska – and the city of Ushuaia based along the Ushuaia Bay facing the Atlantic Ocean.
If you were coming to South America for skiing the best terrain in a short period of time then maybe Cerro Castor will have to wait for your second trip but if you have the time – think about an at least 10-day or 12-day trip – then it is definitely worth to explore this part of the continent.
